About this project: What can the trends in the coffee shop and cafe industry in Hanoi tell us about the broader trends within this rapidly changing society? The film-makers explore the safe scene in Hanoi and contemplate what this tells us about how the tastes and aspirations of people are changing in Vietnam.

Comment from The Learning Project: This is an engaging and thoughtfully composed documentary film. The narration holds the attention of the audience well and builds towards an insighful and well crafted conclusion. Some of the interviews needed work but overall the film communicates effectively and feels like an authentic and well thought out piece of film-making.

About this project: The group wanted to explore the relationship between playing video games and academic performance. They felt that the stereotype of ‘hardcore’ gamers being lazy and irresponsible students was unfair and wanted to show another side of the story.

Comment from The Learning Project: This group lost all of their footage when one of the group’s laptop was stolen. They then remade the film twice, showing an ability to incorporate the ideas of others as well as maintaining their own ideas. We appreciate the use of layering in this film, with a combination of interview and imagined sequences. There is also a clear story that is supported with variety of shots employed. We particularly like the use of point of view in the computer vs boy doing his HW sequence.

About this project: What do we talk about during lunch and what does that reveal about us? was the simple and original starting point for this group. Their short film covers ‘crushes’, issues with pets and who is going to carry the heavy pots as the students serve, eat and clean-up over a lunch hour at their school.

Comment from The Learning Project: This group worked very effectively from the start. They had a clear vision of what they wanted to do and by choosing a simple but important daily event were able to communicate a lot about their lives. From interviewing them, we know they had many difficulties behind the scenes and disagreements but problems were dealt with practically and the project kept moving forward. The school canteen was a noisy place but the final sound mix and use of narration tells the story clearly despite the challenges of capturing good audio.

About this project: What are the challenges of running a food stall in Hanoi? What makes people stay loyal to one particular market stall? And, how does she create her version Bun Ca (fish noodle soup)?

Comment from The Learning Project: There is a simple effectiveness in this film. The filmmakers work hard to show the reality of this food stall. The filming is effective and the narration and captions provide clear and useful information about the subject. The viewer is left with  a good sense of the care that goes into creating the dishes and challenges of running a food stall in Hanoi. Award : Excellence in Storytelling and Research

About this project: This film follows the dreams and ambitions of Bui Cam Ngoc. She wants to be a designer but can she overcome the challenges of convincing her parents to let her follow her interests.

Comment from The Learning Project: The opening animated sequence connects the audience with the story straight away. Later sequences show Ngoc developing her skills and attending art classes. Some strong use of animation and narration in this project. Perhaps more information could have been included to build on the engaging personal beginning but overall a good first attempt at making a documentary film.

About this project: An ambitious film that aims to explain the history of a Hanoi temple as well as show the everyday life of the people that visit it.

Comment from The Learning Project: This project went through many drafts and the group worked really hard to keep adding more clarity and information to their project. Audiences responded well to the animation and humour in the presentation. Perhaps later sequences could have been edited to communicate the ideas quicker but we very much appreciate the dedication and ambition of this group.

About this project: What are the positive and negative effects of playing computer games? This covers the background to gaming in Vietnam and interviews subjects about their gaming habits.

Comment from The Learning Project: Some technically strong features to this documentary. This group had a strong vision of what they wanted to create and did not want to follow some of the conventions of documentary film-making. We applaud their desire to follow their own path and hope Hieu, one of the films’ creators as he goes on to follow his ambitions by studying film at college.

About this project: Why do I play video games? A personal reflection from a teenage girl that likes virtual worlds created where you shoot things and blow them up.

Comment from The Learning Project: Another group that stuck at their task despite many set backs and challenges. The result contains a strong personal story. The project would have benefited from another edit to move things at a quicker pace but there is a strong sense of conviction in the narration and message.

Comment from The Learning Project: This group had a clear vision for what they wanted to do and a clear affinity with the topic. The opening sequence is well composed and some good interviews with the teachers from Hanoi Academy

About this project: What does Hanoi’s Old Quarter offer in the evenings? A mixture of still photography and a night walk through Hanoi’s old quarter in the evening.

Comment from The Learning Project: Some excellent still photography and well written narration in a project that had to overcome the challenge of limited access to the subject.
